With The End In Mind
"That's a great scenario to get in your mind as you look to begin at brand new year. As we begin a new year, we are always looking forward. We are looking down the road. We are looking toward the sunset. We are looking beyond the horizon at the end of the year.
"Today, I want you to take a different approach. I want you to begin with the end in mind. I want you to fast forward to December 31st. Pretend it is 11:59pm on December 31st of this year. What would you want your year to look like? What would you have wanted to accomplish?
"By the way, would it make any difference to you in your answer if I also added one factor? At 11:59pm on December 31st your life will end? One year, some year, will be your last year. We should never let that last day of that last year take us by surprise.
"A taxi driver picked up a passenger and was driving down the road with him when without warning the passenger tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Hey, Buddy." The taxi driver screamed and lost control of the cab, nearly hitting a bus, jumped the curb and stopped just inches from going through a huge plate glass window.
"For a few moments everything was silent, then the driver said, "Man, you scared the daylights out of me!" The passenger said, "I'm sorry. I didn't realize just tapping you on the shoulder would frighten you so much." The driver then said, 'It really is not your fault. You see, today is my first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for the last twenty-five years.'"
