"We are in a series called iMatter. We have been discovering the tremendous truth that - lasting security and true significance can only be found in the person of Jesus Christ. That is important, because those are the two single greatest things people are searching for in life. God wants our lives to count. He wants us to live a life of significance. We have been discovering that in these series of messages on the "I am" sayings of Jesus. Several times in the Gospel of John, Jesus made a statement about who He was that is not found anywhere else in scripture. In the last of these sayings, He gave this "I am" statement.
"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (John 15: 1-3, NASB)
"Most likely, Jesus had just left the Upper Room, where He had the Last Supper with His disciples and He was walking to the Garden of Gethsemene. When He made this statement, it would have been very easy to understand what He was referring to, because in Palestine, vines grew abundantly. When those vines were properly cultivated and kept, they produced sweet grapes, which in turn was used to make wine. It was very important for the gardener to keep the grapes trimmed, so they could bear a lot of fruit."
