"Out of all the Ten Commandments, this is the only one that contains no negative word whatsoever. It is a totally positive commandment. All of the other nine commandments tell us not to do something. This is the only commandment that tells us simply to do something.

"The first four commandments deal with our relationship to God. The second six commandments deal with our relationship to others. It is extremely important to notice that God begins with our relationship to the family. He doesn't tell us how soldiers should fight, how business people should make money, how teachers should teach, or how pastors should preach, but He does tell us how sons and daughters should treat their mothers and fathers.

"It is the first command with a promise of a blessing if you obey it. There is a reason for that - as a family goes so goes the nation. The values that hold a nation together--decency, kindness, integrity, courtesy, and morality--begin at home. The way to destroy a nation is to destroy the family. The way children can destroy the family is by dishonoring their parents."
