All By Myself: The Fear Of Lonliness
"Twenty-two percent of all Americans ate dinner alone last night. A Gallup poll recently stated that 3 out of 10 Americans are lonely. The novelist, Thomas Wolfe, once said, "The whole conviction of my life now rests upon the belief that loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, particular to myself and a few other solitary men is the central and inevitable fact of human existence. We all experience loneliness at one time or another."
"A study by the American Council of Life Insurance reported that the loneliest group in America are college students. I can relate to that, because one of the most difficult nights I've ever spent in my life was my first night at college away from home. I was over 450 miles away from home. I didn't know anyone. It was the first time I had ever been away from my family and I literally cried myself to sleep, as a seventeen year old kid, because I had never ever experienced such loneliness.
"The reason why loneliness is so horrible is because God made us for relationships. He made us to need each other. When God put Adam in the Garden of Eden, you would have thought he had every single thing he could possibly want. I admit he had no shirt and he had no shoes, but he had no problems. There was no stress, no deadlines, not a financial worry in his life, yet in Genesis 2:18 God said,
"It is not good for man to be alone." (Genesis 2:18, NIV)
"The first thing God ever said that was not good about earth was loneliness."
